Since YG Entertainment is famous with swag style and somewhat ‘dark’ vibe, it’s not rare to see their artists wearing so many black outfits, and BLACKPINK is not an exception
So I’m gonna rank all of BLACKPINK’s remarkable black dresses on the scale of Best to Worst and the reasons for it. But this time, I’ll mention one member at a time because there are too many equally beautiful dresses that I have to rank them separately.
As a loyal Chanel ambassador, Jennie rarely appears without any items of the house. In fact, Chanel also seems to implicitly recognize Jennie as their muse when continuously sending her the best, un-released outfits from the latest collections.
For BLACKPINK’s music video “How You Like That,” Jennie once again went viral when appearing in one of the most beautiful and sophisticated designs of the fashion house.
It seems like every single thing on this dress is a highlight itself. From the popping white bodice with pearl buttons, the peter pan collar, the big puffy sleeves with flower details that add an innocent look to the dress, to those tiny black bows on the waist.
Magically, that many details didn’t make the dress look overwhelmed at all, but very harmonious instead. Plus, the sheer organza material brings up light and a floating feeling. This dress is such a masterpiece!
At the time “How You Like That” was released, this dress was on the latest Spring/Summer collection of Chanel and was yet to be on sale. However, as mentioned above, Jennie is Chanel’s muse so the fact that she got the chance to wear this is nothing much of a surprise.
Then comes one of the most iconic stage outfits of Jennie. In the Solo performance at 2018 Gayo Daejun, Jennie stirred the Internet up for not only her fierce and posh aura but also for the gorgeous dress she was wearing.
This is a mullet ruffle design from BALMAIN which turned Jennie into a mysterious, beautiful black peacock with its tail down.
So the stylist didn’t make too many changes to the black tulle part outside. Instead, she chose to replace the long-sleeve sequin dress with a ton sur ton lace corset to expose Jennie’s bare shoulders.
For the bottom part, she used a simple pair of protection shorts. The stylist also removed the original black bow belt and used a bling bling limestone belt instead to highlight Jennie’s waist and add some sparkles to the outfit, making Jennie shine under the stage light. This is also a remarkable dress.
Back in 2017, when BLACKPINK attended the red carpet at Gayo Daejun, Jennie was complimented the most for appearing in this super classy, chic and feminine dress.
This gorgeous and mysterious design is one of the masterpieces created by Valentino. If you look closely, you’ll see that the inner black layer was cut out completely and replaced by a pair of protection shorts to show off Jennie’s legs and make the dress look lighter.
Seriously, black protection shorts are like the ultimate weapon to all BLACKPINK’s outfits. The best part of this dress is the sophisticated lace layer, which adds elegance to the look.
Besides, YG’s stylists also added a leather belt to create a highlight on Jennie’s waist.
So, the three above dresses all look super feminine, floating and possess that princess-vibe. Yet, for the next two designs, you’ll see a completely new spirit in each dress.
In a photoshoot with ELLE, Jennie turned herself into a luxurious classy lady in a design from Chanel.
Since this dress has a quite different design, the opinion of netizens was polarized towards it. To some, the dress looks stiff and not flattering.
Yet, considering that Chanel intentionally made this dress to be special, which means that it was not meant to be worn on some casual events, this dress should actually be praised for having a mixture of classiness and modernity.
You can clearly see the classy vibe when looking at the minimal design, the black color and the fluffy sleeves. Yet, the modern spirit can be seen through Chanel’s choice of material and the length of the dress.
Still, though looking not very flattering on Jennie, this dress is still an impressive design and has helped Jennie to make a mark in her fashion journey.
The last black dress of Jennie on this list is a modern and audacious design from Alexander McQueen. When appearing at the 2018 Gayo Daejun red carpet, Jennie surprised netizens with this unique design.
In fact, this wasn’t a dress. It was a separate knit set combined with a leather corset, but it seems like BLACKPINK’s stylist has sewn the top and the skirt together to create a dress because the large black band on the skirt has disappeared.
Except for that, nothing else was altered. There were also not many accessories that went with the outfit except a simple pair of earrings because everything about this dress is already eye-catching, from the mesh material to the bullet corset.
Though the dress is for sure impressive because the high chances are you have never seen such a design before, when Jennie had them on, many people think she looked quite old and stiff.
Maybe it’s because she has often appeared in designs that show off her legs or shoulders, this full-body covering dress just gave out a different vibe, thus people haven’t got used to it yet. But still, I have to admit that the designers have done an excellent job in bringing a new breeze to Jennie’s style.
Attending one of the 2020 events of Jimmy Choo, Jisoo left netizens breathless with her appearance. Since the dress code of this event was black and white, Jisoo opted for a mini black dress from Versace.
Though some may think this design is too simple, or in other words, boring, it looked completely stunning with Jisoo’s porcelain white skin.
In fact, since she has always been praised for having a gentle, Korean-spirit beauty, the minimal design of the dress somehow blended perfectly with her, making Jisoo look like a true lady: chic, feminine and sophisticated.
In fact, this design was also worn by Hwasa when she attended the 2020 Seoul Music Award.
I think the phrase “fine feather makes fine bird” should be changed into “fine birds makes fine feather” because despite wearing the same dress, the vocalist of MAMAMOO gave out a completely different vibe.
Since Hwasa has a curvier body shape and also a more tanned skin tone compared to that of Jisoo, she emitted a bold and sexy aura, whereas Jisoo impressed people with a girly and gentle spirit.
The next dress in this list is a sophisticated dress studded with countless gems from Alice and Olivia. Attending the 2017 Seoul Music Award, Jisoo captured major spotlights thanks to this unique design. Looking at this dress, people can imagine mesmerizing zodiac constellations in the night sky.
Because the dress already looks heavy due to the big amount of gems, Jisoo smart chose a simple straight hairstyle and minimized the accessories to balance the look. Also, the polka-dot tulle shirt Jisoo wore underneath really helped her to restyle the dress better.
The next dress is a design that was also studded with lots of gems, unfortunately, it didn’t help Jisoo to achieve a sophisticated look. It’s this dress from the How You Like That MV.
Though it was true that the scene wanted to express the powerfulness of a post-breakup girl, the overall look was quite off.
As you can see, the overly jeweled part on the bust created a very heavy look, like Jisoo can barely breathe under those gems, and the velvet material combined with the bodycon design made Jisoo look way older than her age.
Actually, this dress looks very similar to the velvet Ao Dai – a Vietnamese traditional costume. But while younger girls prefer chiffon or silk Ao Dai, velvet Ao Dai with lots of studded gems is often designed for older ladies, thus you can see why people find Jisoo’s dress in this scene looks old.
Then, here comes maybe the worst black dress Jisoo has ever worn. In the 2018 ADEKUVER launch event, Jisoo opted for a full black set from SHANSHANRUAN.
Though this is a separate set of a top and a skirt, when being worn together, it looks like a regular dress. Jisoo still captured all the attention for her gorgeous face as always, but her outfit was totally contrasting.
You can also notice the dress looks too bulky, which has hidden all Jisoo’s curves and made her body look larger. For the top, the sleeves were too loose and the neck was too high, plus the organza material looks cheap and super wrinkled.
Beware of organza, it either makes you look dreamy and floating or look like you’re wearing a nylon bag.
I understand that the design is meant to be a modernized hanbok top, but it just didn’t work. And for the skirt, the sheer, ruffled detail was like forcing the eyes to play the puzzle.
Being the first-ever global ambassador of Céline, the frequency of Lisa wearing the Italian house’s pieces has been on the rise lately. In the online press conference for the release of “How You Like That,” Lisa wore a stunning Céline dress.
Despite this being a long and full cover dress, it didn’t make Lisa look any older but instead mature and very chic. The most special part about this dress is the golden stripes. They gave the dress a futuristic vibe and helped enhance Lisa’s height.
Since Lisa has a super-duper small waistline, she wore a ton sur ton belt to show it off. Also, the pair of boots she was wearing went very well with the overall look thanks to the black color and golden details.
Having such a unique dress on, she looked like having just returned from the future, super badass and mysterious.
Moving on to the next beautiful dress on Lisa’s list. In the special photoshoot where Lisa was confirmed to be the new muse of Céline, she had on one of the pieces that straightforwardly confirmed her title “living barbie doll.”
With a slender figure, Lisa perfectly showed off the beauty of this dress. The babydoll design brought an innocent kind of look to Lisa, also helped showing off her long legs.
The shimmery organza material was cleverly cut and gathered into beautiful ruffles, creating volume for the dress. Though the original styling was more on the classy end of the spectrum, Lisa added girliness to the outfit by combining a pair of sheer black gloves.
Also, to better reveal the dress’s beauty, she omitted the black sequin blazer and the headband from the original set, and opted for a nude makeup look and natural hairstyle to draw more attention to the dress. I’m literally in love with this outfit.
It seems like Céline has noticed that Lisa looks very good in black, so they must have suggested Lisa wear this girly black dress for the Moonshot X Lisa event organized exclusively in Thailand.
Like the golden stripes dress above, this Fluit Dress In Plumetis also impressed people with golden patterns, and this time it was golden polka-dots.
Possessing a white yet warm undertone skin, Lisa seemed to suit black and gold a lot. With a ruffle detail and the youthful polka-dot pattern, she shook off the badass image to become a soft and cute girl.
Besides, her ashy golden hair did a very good job of complimenting her dress.
Not as gorgeous as the three black dresses above, this Céline design Lisa wore in “How You Like That” didn’t catch my eyes at all.
The dress was made out of a super nice material, with black sequins which gave it a sleek effect. However, it didn’t look flattering on Lisa all due to the huge ruffle neckline.
Probably, this neckline was intentionally created to add a highlight to the dress, yet it made Lisa look kinda cheesy and eye-puzzling, and of course didn’t do a good job in neutralizing her wide shoulders, but rather highlighted them.
Also, the whole look was quite simple, and thus didn’t impress many people.
For the next two outfits, you’ll soon see why Rosé’s spirit animal was probably a swan.
During the photoshoot for MV “How You Like That,” Rosé went viral for the fairy-like look of a ballerina with such a floating tulle dress and cotton hair.
Though this black tulle dress is minimal in design, it’s exactly the factor that made it sophisticated for the accessories. The exceptionally high-quality tulle layers were wisely cut to add extra volume, making the dress look super floating and dreamy.
Honestly, Rosé looks just like a ballerina playing the iconic black swan role. You can also see she was wearing a pair of knitted stockings often seen on ballet dancers, and especially a pair of pointe shoes, so this black swan image is clearly what Rosé’s stylist opted for.
If the first outfit made Rosé look like a black swan ballerina, then the second one turned her into a real black swan.
Though in the same phase of “How You Like That”, Jisoo and Lisa’s dresses weren’t praised very much, Rosé’s looked super gorgeous and stole all the spotlight.
She not only managed to express the powerful message behind the scene but also looked like an eagle queen, even though this dress can easily make the wearer look old due to its dark color and full cover design.
The deep V-neck neckline was the highlight point that helps neutralize the full coverage look. The black satin layers combined with Rosé’s glowy silver hair make the scene spectacular. It seems like Rosé and this dress were born for each other.
To help her waist be more noticeable under all those ruffles, the stylist added a beautiful belt from Alexander Wang.
The next black dress on this list is no other than the Priscilla Mini Dress from For Love & Lemons that Rosé wore on the historic Coachella stage.
Though the glitter on the dress was dim, under the powerful lighting of the stage, Rosé looked like she was walking in a night sky full of stars. As usual, a very nice belt was added to enhance her tiny waistline.
Finally, the last black dress on the list. Though Rosé was often said to have that punk-rock vibe, she didn’t look quite good in the leather dress from Alexander McQUEEN.
The design looks decent, and that’s all. What’s off about this dress is the drape on the left that’s meant to be the highlight, it looks stiff like cardboard so when Rosé walked, it appeared heavy.
Leather is a material that looks best for a tight design, which will closely hold the body of the wearer. Should not waste it on such things like ruffles and drapes.
Besides, do you notice the color of that leather? It’s not completely black, but rather greyish, and it also has too much texture, not very smooth. That’s what makes the dress seem less expensive.
Moreover, I don’t get the idea of using purple for the suede layer inside, it just didn’t go well with the overall look. To conclude, this dress is an item that should not be in Rosé’s wardrobe.
So, that’s the end of the list. What are your opinions about these black dresses? Comment down below, I’ll read them all.
