After ‘Youth of May’, Lee Do Hyun plans to return to the small screen in a series that shares the same director with True Beauty.
Lee Do Hyun is a talented actor that recently won ‘Best Rookie Actor’ at Baeksang – a true proof of his versatile acting. He is well-known for taking on complex characters and constantly developing his acting skills.
After playing the second male lead in ‘Hotel de Luna’, Lee Do Hyun started to gain recognition via multiple projects like ’18 Again’, ‘Sweet Home’, and most recently, ‘Youth of May‘.
When ‘Youth of May’ finished airing last May, fans were curious to know what’s next to come in the actor’s filmography. And today, we finally get to know: the broadcasting station tvN has confirmed Lee Do Hyun’s appearance in their new series ‘Melancholia’.
His co-star will be the seasoned movie star Im Soo Jung, who played in ‘Search WWW’ and ‘Chicago Typewriter’. Seeing that both had experienced quite the variety of difficult roles, the chemistry and acting is guaranteed in this new drama.
tvN’s new series ‘Melancholia’ will follow the heart-fluttering romance between a female teacher and math genius in a private academy. At the same time, it will reveal the multiple problems occurring on campus.
Im Soo Jung will play Ji Yoon Soo, a math teacher who looks all sweet and weak, but is actually an independent, strong, and decisive woman. Yoon Soo has dedicated her life to math and teaching, and is always willing to support her students who are under immense pressures, as well as help them seek out their own path and dream.
Meanwhile, Lee Do Hyun will be transforming into the math prodigy Baek Seung Yoo. He is a genius that pretended to be stupid, and had gotten the lowest marks in the academy’s entrance exam. Seung Yoo always go around with a pair of dead and soulless eyes, and prefers to take photos of his surroundings by himself.
The reason behind this demeanor is a major plot point to be explored as the series progresses, so we will have to wait to know this handsome character’s tragic past.
The drama will focus on the risky teacher-student relationship, at the same time involves scandals and corruption that is commonplace in supposedly prestigious private academy. It will noticeably take on a more adult theme compared to Lee Do Hyun’s previous works.
This drama will be Lee Do Hyun’s second attempt to play a couple with older actresses, after the widely popular ’18 Again’ (which was based on the famous Hollywood film ’18 Again’, starring superstar Zac Efron, with certain deviations). In the series, he had successfully delivered quite the good chemistry with the experienced actress Kim Ha Neul, who was 17 years older than the young actor.
The age-different kiss in ’18 Again’ had once made headlines on many Korean news sites, and received both negative and positive attention due to its controversial nature.
This is why many netizens believe that ‘Melancholia’ will once again gain the public’s attention. This time, the age difference between Lee Do Hyun and Im Soo Jung is 16 years old, creating ground for yet another controversy-spurning romance and perhaps one or many other kisses? Although it’s not sure if the reception will be positive or negative.
‘Melancholia’ will be written by screenwriter Kim Ji Woon (who was behind ‘Doctor John’, ‘Hyde, Jekyll, Me’, and ‘Cheong Cham Dong Alice’) and directed by director Kim Sang Hyeop (who was behind ‘True Beauty’, ‘Extraordinary You’ and ‘The King In Love’).
