Of all the KPOP girl groups, Red Velvet has always been famous for being gorgeous, being good at live singing, and, unfortunately, having terrible costumes. Despite coming from SM Entertainment, one of three entertainment giants, and having been working in the industry for 6 years, the five girls usually failed fans for wearing unbelievably odd outfits.
These designs were not only confusing but also often showing off their body flaws, turning all the girls into fashion disasters.
Considering the long-lasting bad fashion taste of Red Velvet (RV), some netizens even joked that RV must have had some serious conflicts with the stylists to be dressed so terribly like that. Yet, after Irene’s behavioral scandal, maybe this joke is actually what really happened.
After Irene was exposed by an experienced editor, Kang Kook Hwa, that she spent up to 20 minutes swearing and cursing at the woman, many staff, stylists, and fashion editors that have worked with SME also showed the agreeing view.
People that have worked directly with RV, and especially Irene, not only commented on Kang Kook Hwa’s post but also posted their own story to expose how cruel Irene was. Basically, because the leader of RV has conflicted with lots of people in the fashion field, many believed that she was the reason why RV has been dressed ridiculously throughout their music career.
Ever since RV’s debut, they had already surprised people with the odd fashion style. Yet, it was not until 2018 that their confusing fashion sense indeed went alarming. At the REDMARE concert, fans were all taken aback, but in the negative sense, when seeing five members in costumes that were nothing better than flower wrapping paper.
The outfits were not only tawdry but also like costumes that children in kindergarten often wore when performing.
Irene, who was inherently uncomfortable in short costumes, still had to perform in this ugly design. Since she had a tiny figure, the female idol looked completely like being wrapped in a bunch of tawdry paper.
For Yeri, since she was born with a rectangular body shape, this bulky outfit literally showed out all her flaws, from the broad shoulder to the wide waistline.
Another time where netizens couldn’t stand the fashion style of RV was when they participated in the Nobel award organized by the South Korean government. Since they were there not only to perform but also to receive the certificate of merit, the fact that their clothes were so short and revealing like that raised lots of concerns.
Besides, since the five costumes didn’t look good together and the tight, polka-dot jumpsuit of Irene made her ten times older, most of the opinions were that RV’s fashion failed so badly at such a formal event.
In fact, Red Velvet was not only badly dressed when working on their own schedule but also in public events where there were many journalists working and idols trying to show off the best outfits.
Throughout their career, 2018 was the worst year of RV with regard to the event costumes. From the red carpet to the stages, all the outfits that the five girls put on were oddly confusing.
At the 2018 Gayo Daejejeon, RV’s stylists dressed them in costumes that all made them ten times older and way too 2000.
Especially for Irene, maybe she was truly hated by the stylists because her outfit looked like nothing but a feather duster:
The fact that her costume color was entirely in contrast with other members was already enough to say that the stylists of Red Velvet had done a terrible job in choosing their stage outfits.
Next were their red carpet outfits at the 2018 Gayo Daechukje. Though black and pink could be a sweet combination if being mixed properly, the stylists somehow made RV look super cheesy and outdated.
It seemed like all the outfits were dragged out of an old lady’s closet and given to the five girls in the last minutes. This time, the worst dress of all was still that of Irene. The peacock feathers on her dress looked ruffled and messed up.
The problem with the designs was not only that they were super tawdry but also had nothing to do with the two songs that RV would perform: Be Natural and RBR.
Also in 2018, when RV went to SBS Gayo Daejun, fans were super mad at the stylists because amid the cold winter season, Irene was forced to wear a sleeveless crop-top.
Though her outfit indeed looked better than the previous two stages, she wasn’t supposed to wear it because it wasn’t suitable for the freezing weather at the time.
Also because of such unsuitability, fans initially thought that the outfit was only worn on the red carpet. Yet, they were triggered to see that Irene had to endure the freezing weather, going on stage with such a revealing costume and putting up with it till the end of the show.
Anyway, except for Irene, the outfits of the other four members were quite acceptable.
In June 2019, RV came back with “Zimzalabim” and confused netizens from the song to the way they dressed. In this comeback, they had to have on all types of patched-up clothes with colors that couldn’t be more eye-tiring.
If BLACKPINK’s stylists were famous for altering clothes to become unbelievably beautiful, then Red Velvet’s stylists were kinda notorious for cutting clothes into some eccentric pieces. They also made fans question by making Wendy a top out of a bag.
During this era, their stage costumes had never been praised for once. At one stage, they wore outfits that were too shiny and redundant; the other time, they would wear clothes that were too colorful and unintegrated.
You remember the feather duster top that Irene once wore? Maybe that was Red Velvet’s stylists’ favorite because here, Wendy was forced to wear that top again.
And maybe the flower wrapping paper was also the stylist’s favorite since, for Yeri, her bottom looked like nothing but a half-torn piece of paper.
After a year of being dissed so hard with regard to fashion, RV’s style gradually improved throughout the two eras in 2019: Umpah Umpah and Psycho. Sadly, since Wendy suffered from some severe injuries, the other four members didn’t appear in public together so often anymore.
One of the rarest times RV performed as a four-member group was when they were at the GMarket Smile Club Concert. Generally, the outfits this time looked quite good on all members, except for Yeri.
Somehow, the maknae has always been the victim of fashion disasters at nearly all stages of RV. The only time that the stylist did a good job in choosing her outfits was in the Peek-a-Boo era.
Turning back to the main point, at the GMarket Smile Club Concert, Yeri was once again terribly dressed. Since she had a rectangular body shape and quite a short neck, the fact that she had to wear a crop-top and an A-line skirt showed out most of her flaws.
On November 19, RV again turned their fans off when appearing in one of the most outdated and peasant outfits. As you can see, all the designs, especially that of Irene, were way too 2000.
Not only the cheesy vibrant purple made them ten times older, but the details were all confusing and eye-tiring. Besides, there was a lack of uniformity in the group’s image. Whereas Joy and Irene both dressed as if it was summertime, Yeri and Seulgi’s outfits carried a strong vibe of the freezing winter.
Also, in this event, because there was a technical error happening while Irene was performing, she violently threw away the walkie-talkie.
When fans carefully inspected the clip, they noticed that the outfit Irene wore when rehearsing was different from what she wore when performing officially.
Connecting the dots together, many people believed that, because of such a sudden change in clothing had resulted in the loose cohesiveness between the clothes and the auditory devices. Eventually, this whole thing pissed Irene off and led to her losing temper and anathematizing the editor.
Though it remained unsure whether RV’s terrible costume was because Irene mistreated the staff throughout a long period of time. Yet, even if the rumor isn’t true then there is one truth remains: of all the top gen 3 girl groups, Red Velvet is the one with the worst stage outfits and also the highest frequency of unstable fashion sense.
This has made many people regretful for the five girls because the costumes were often so ugly that their goddess beauty couldn’t even save the game.
Yet, regardless of how good or bad the stylists were, they still deserved the appropriate respect from artists. In the end, they were still people that take care of and manage all the backstage processes for all idols, thus, there are no reasons to mistreat or disrespect them.
Do you really believe the rumor that Red Velvet has bad stage outfits was because Irene mistreated the stylists for the past few years? Don’t hesitate to comment your thoughts down below.
